Experimental fluid dynamics


FILOSE fishes and robots and investigated in a controlled hydrodynamic environment. It is a flume pipe where flow straighteners and laminators are used to create laminar flow. By putting objects into the flow we can create controlled turbulence.



The flow is investigated using Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV). This is a flow visualization technique. It is based on tracking particles in water, illuminated with a laser and recorded with the camera. It permits creating a vector field of the flow and analyzing flow interaction with the fish or the robot.



We can record the motion of the fish and the robot and correlate it to hydrodynamic events recorded with DPIV.
